Post-Pandemic Resilient Communities: Is the Informal Economy a Reservoir for the Next Generation of Digitalized and Green Businesses in the Global South?

The PRESILIENT project is designed to strengthen the resilience of communities most affected by informal employment across the Global South. The informal sector employs close to 2 billion workers worldwide, with 93% of global informal employment concentrated in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These regions were also the ones hit hardest during the pandemic with job losses. The project brings together 14 partners and 15 associated partners to train 15 early-stage researchers (ESRs) and produce novel data and policy insights on informality across 15 countries.

As a non-academic partner, Transitions will host one PhD student for an 18-month placement and join partner meetings to help train ESRs alongside academic supervisors. Transitions will support the project’s research through non-academic writing, helping researchers translate findings on informality into an accessible format for policy changes.

By combining rigorous research with hands-on training, PRESILIENT aims for sustainable, evidence-based solutions that will support more resilient economies and communities throughout the Global South.
