Fact-Checked: Journalists and Activists Against Lies and Propaganda

Fact-checked was a Serbia-focused project that brings together journalists and civil society activists to counter disinformation and political propaganda. In a deeply polarized media environment, the project creates a collaborative space for training, knowledge exchange, and joint action, reinforcing fact-based journalism and civic advocacy. Participants were equipped with the tools to verify information and push back against misinformation campaigns that threaten democratic discourse.

Fact-Checked included workshops, public events, and cross-sector collaborations aimed at fostering a culture of accountability and transparency in the media. It also supported the creation of compelling, fact-checked content and encouraged cooperation between media outlets and NGOs, with the goal of building a network of trusted voices dedicated to challenging disinformation and improving media literacy among the Serbian public.

Empowered Civic Watchdogs: The project successfully trained activists and election observers in media literacy and advanced verification techniques, providing them with the necessary skills to identify propaganda and hold public officials accountable during electoral processes.

A Scalable Digital Knowledge Base: Through the production of specialized online courses and a substantial volume of editorial content, the initiative created a permanent digital repository of resources for countering disinformation in the region.

Professional Capacity Building: Journalists and media students participated in live online workshops focused on investigative techniques and debunking falsehoods, ensuring that verified, high-quality reporting continues to reach the public.

Cross-Border Information Exchange: By adapting local fact-checking content for English-speaking audiences, the project established a wider framework for understanding and countering regional propaganda across European borders.
