Level Up: Leveling Up Media Literacy Education for Older Europeans through Gamification

2024-2026

The Level Up Project was an innovative educational initiative that enhanced media literacy among older Europeans through engaging, game-based learning methods. Recognizing the increased vulnerability of seniors to online misinformation and disinformation, the project empowered participants with the skills needed to critically navigate today’s complex digital landscape. By incorporating gamification into its approach, the initiative made learning accessible, interactive, and enjoyable for older adults.

The project addressed a pressing need across Europe: closing the digital literacy gap among older populations and enabling them to participate confidently and safely in online spaces. Through targeted workshops, learning activities, and a collaborative online platform, Level Up equipped participants with tools to assess digital content, identify manipulative narratives, and share learned strategies with their peers.

Project Overview

Empowered Senior Communities: Over 250 seniors participated in pilot testing and workshops, gaining measurable confidence in their ability to identify misinformation and navigate manipulative online tactics.

A Scalable Educational Tool: The project successfully launched the Level Up Game, a digital educational platform specifically tailored to the cognitive and accessibility needs of users aged 55 and older.

Professional Capacity Building: More than 60 educators, librarians, and social workers were trained in the Level Up methodology, ensuring that these gamified teaching strategies continue to reach adult education programs.

Cross-Border Knowledge Exchange: By uniting partners from Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe, the project created a multilingual framework of resources available in English, Czech, Spanish, and Bulgarian that remains a permanent asset for European media literacy.

Bridging the Generational Gap: The workshops fostered vital intergenerational dialogue as younger trainers and older participants worked together to deconstruct modern digital narratives, effectively reducing social isolation among the elderly.
